Adrar Nouh & Hemp concretes Project

WHC17 WORKSHOP Abstract:

Hemp concretes

This paper synthesizes different parameters that have influence on the performances of a very promising material for energy saving building envelopes, known as hemp concrete. Variables are not only dependent from the plant aggregate itself but also from the choice of binders, the formulations, and the application procedures. Natural fibers are certainly more difficult to control in a concrete matrix than mineral and synthetic fibers, e.g. because of their mayor water intake or the release of polysaccharides that can have influence on the setting process. This is a drawback to the share and mainstream use of hemp concrete in construction till science has approached the knowledge to manage this innovative system in all aspects, achieving optimum results and durability, wanted for each of its numerous applications.

WHC17 WORKSHOP Abstract:

Use of hemp waste material for the socio economic development in Morocco’s historic hemp farming region

This paper reveals the different historic uses of hemp in the region of Central Rif (Morocco), including industrial and medical ones. It starts with an introduction that explains how the hemp arrived in Africa and in particular in the Rif region and reveals the middle age links with Al-Andalus (Spain). It farther focuses on alternative development with hemp waste in an area where farmers depend from illicit hemp culture and reveals the historic context, environmental benefits and perspectives for socioeconomic development with the historic hemp variety of the region, derived from an intercontinental meeting of sativa and indica.
